Exhibition Reception: January *Broadway show tunes* reception—date to be announced
Playbill Throughout the Years is a traveling exhibition on loan from Northport Public Library. It features 150 framed issues of the iconic Broadway (and off-Broadway) theater program, which were donated to Northport by their patron Joann Proscia.
Offering a visual tour through the history of New York theater, the collection begins with the Playbill for South Pacific. This award-winning Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, which is legendary for its confrontation of racism in America, premiered on Broadway in 1949. The collection continues with Playbills for other classic Broadway shows, such as Cabaret, Les Misérables and West Side Story, as well as for shows that are rather less well known or did not run for long. Examples of these include The Green Bird, an adaptation of a play by the eighteenth-century Italian playwright Carlo Gozzi, and the 1979 production of The Goodbye People, which closed after just one performance.”
