How a Library Book Sparked Artistic Inspiration

From the Shelves of Floyd Memorial Library to an Art Gallery in Greenport

We’re delighted to share a heartwarming story about how one of our librarian’s recommendations inspired an upcoming exhibition by one of North Fork’s most acclaimed artists, Arden Scott.

A Unexpected Encounter

In the spring of 2023, Arden Scott visited Floyd Memorial Library, as she often does, seeking inspiration and knowledge. During her visit, Chris, our Reference & Local History Librarian, approached her with a suggestion: “Arden, here is a book you may be interested in.” The book was about Andrei Rublev, a Russian monk and fresco painter who pre-dated the Renaissance.

A Spark of Inspiration

Arden was instantly captivated by the book. The detailed accounts of Rublev’s life and his iconic frescoes ignited a creative spark within her. Over the following year, Arden immersed herself in Rublev’s world, drawing inspiration from his works. This profound connection led to the creation of six stunning drawings and one intricate sculpture, all inspired by Rublev’s icons.

Exhibition Details

We are thrilled to announce that these inspired pieces will be on display at The Gallery at Holy Trinity Church in Greenport, NY, from July 13 to September 13, 2024. This exhibition is a testament to the unexpected and transformative power of a library book.

A Celebration of Art and Knowledge

Arden’s story is a beautiful reminder of how libraries can be a source of inspiration and creativity. You never know where a library book might take you. We invite you to visit the exhibition and witness firsthand the remarkable journey from the pages of a book to the creation of art.
