Closing Event

Saturday June 13 · 2.30 pm Floyd Memorial Library, Greenport, NY
Stow Wengenroth (1906–1978), Sterling Harbor, c. 1951. Pen and ink on paper, 7.5 x 14 inches. Collection of Joanna Lane.

A special afternoon to mark the close of this remarkable exhibition featuring lithographer Stow Wengenroth, his wife Edith Flack Ackley (writer, dollmaker, designer), and her sister Marjorie Flack (children’s author, illustrator) — three celebrated artists with close ties to Greenport. The exhibition also features new marionettes, created in dialogue with Ackley’s historic models, by contemporary puppet maker Carmen Campos, Ed.D.

Join us for a screening of two short films and a live Q&A. Heather Atwood’s The Color of Light – Stow Wengenroth (part of her Color of Light series) interweaves extracts from a 1978 documentary on Wengenroth by Mary Arbuckle. This will be followed by Mary Arbuckle’s full-length short, featuring additional footage of Wengenroth discussing his work. The recordings also include the prominent American realist painter Andrew Wyeth, who declares Wengenroth “the best artist working in black-and-white in America.” Both films run 24 minutes in total.

The Joanna Lane Collection of Wengenroth Works, which forms the main body of Stow Wengenroth + The Flacks, consists of original oil paintings and watercolors, as well as drawings in various media (drybrush, pen and ink, charcoal and pencil). Visitors have described the collection as world-class and museum quality — but its future is uncertain. This may be the last chance to see these works together before they are dispersed.

Free admission. All are welcome. The exhibition will be open to view on Saturday, June 13, from 9.30 am; the films will be screened at 2.30 pm, with Q&A to follow.

📹 We’re looking for a volunteer videographer to document the exhibition and closing event — please reach out if you can help!
